Assignment 1, Learning Outcome 1 – Unit 3 and 52

Assignment 1 appendix 1. Public service advertising & research appendix. Learning outcome for units 3 & 52.

I have researched into different controversial, and banned adverts to see what the public find too distressing to make sure my advert doesn’t offend them too much – yet still makes them remember the problem.

“Barnardo’s uses shock tactics to tackle child poverty, this strategy has backfired. More than 60 people contacted the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) through its website, and dozens of people called the within hours of the ads appearing. The first in the series of newspaper adverts from Barnardo’s shows a new-born baby with a cockroach crawling out of his mouth. Another advert in the “silver spoons” campaign features a baby with a methylated spirits bottle in its mouth while a third shows a baby with a syringe. The headline on the adverts says: “There are no silver spoons for children born into poverty.””

“Stark billboards and television commercials that feature overweight kids are part of a controversial anti-obesity campaign in Atlanta. The goal of the “Stop Sugarcoating It, Georgia” ads is to shock families into recognizing that obesity is a problem. The campaign is making an impact, but the tactics are raising questions. One of the ads features a little boy and his mom entering a room with two folding chairs. They’re both clearly overweight. They sit and look at each other. “Mom, why am I fat?” the boy asks her. The mother bows her head, and the tag line appears. It reads: “75 percent of Georgia parents with overweight kids don’t recognize the problem.” Georgia has the second highest number of obese kids in the country, behind Mississippi. In another spot, a young girl speaks directly to the camera about a disease she says she has. “My doctor says I have something called hypertension,” she says. “I’m really scared.” The ads are modeled after anti-smoking and anti-methamphetamine campaigns intended to shock the audience. “It has to be harsh. If it’s not, nobody’s going to listen,” says Linda Matzigkeit, vice president of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the pediatric hospital running the campaign.”

After presenting my pitch, I feel that there were some things that went well, for example there wasn’t too much information on the pitch so it wasn’t overpowering for the audience. We also showed different videos and posters so it was easy for the audience to see the difference. I do however feel that next time I need to speak louder and try and talk to the camera more, and become more engaging with them. Personally, I feel it very difficult talking for pitches or towards an audience, so I need to practice more to try and increase my confidence. I feel that this presentation would be a pass/merit grade.

The type of language that I will use will be different to a commercial advert as commercial adverts will be persuading the viewer to purchase something they don’t need. I shall include different facts and statistics which again will be different to what commercial advertising does.

What I will be doing in today’s lesson

In today’s lesson I shall be preparing my script for my video evaluation that is due in on Friday. I will make sure that I’m using my assignment 2 pitch so I can have a detailed introduction, I will then go on to talk about my target audience and how they would access my production pieces in relation to other ones in existence. I will also try to find if there is any historical relevance to the local area and if there is any aspect of culture that it’s representing.
